Does your notebook use nforce audio? I doubt it. I also doubt that your notebook will go up to the same power levels that your nforce sound chip will, making distortion unlikely. Did you try 75 or so? I have mine set at around 60 and even that is loud for the volume control on my speakers.

Santa Cruz vs nForce audio?
In the device manager, audio devices are "NVIDIA nForce Audio Codec Interface" I checked around and it seems that this has happened to a lot of people (seems to be with XP Home and Pro), lots of references to this problem on PC's, lots of cries for help, but none of them have a solution posted!
